Sony BDP-S770

The entertainment industry is seeing a 3D revolution. 3D products are coming to the market at warp speed and plunging prices. Of all the manufacturers, Sony is the only one involved in every aspect of the product chain, from 3D movies to HDTVs and 3D blu-ray players. Top of the line among the 3D players is the Sony BDP-S770. Like other high end models, it has integrated Wi-Fi, Bravia Internet Video Link and DLNA support for accessing content across the home network. In addition to 3D blu-ray playback it also play DVDs, CDs as well as SACDs.

And on top of that, it works with your iPhone/iPod Touch using a Remote Control app, which is free from the Apple App store. This application allows an iPhone/iPod touch to function as a remote control.

In terms of design, Sony has made the BDP-S770 different from previous Sony players. It features the new Monolithic Design Concept.

And Sony finally evolved past the awkward Ethernet-only Blu-ray players it offered in the past with the addition of built in Wi-Fi, making it easy to connect to your wireless network at home. It features an Ethernet jack and has built in Wi-Fi wireless (802.11n) with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) for easy access to Sony’s BRAVIA Internet Video platform and BD-LIVE functionality. It supports online content streaming from Netflix, Pandora, Slacker, Amazon Video on Demand, Qriocity, YouTube and over 25 providers through the Sony BRAVIA Internet Video platform. However the S770 does not support 5.1 surround tracks from these video streaming sources unless you rent/buy the disk. We hope Sony will get this fixed with a future firmware update.

It will also have full HD 1080p picture quality and BD-LIVE functionality. Sony has also integrated IP Content Noise Reduction into the BDP-S770, which made subtle improvements in picture quality from all the video streaming sources. The Precision Cinema HD Upscaling processor also aids in rendering a smoother picture from DVD discs.

Actual user review:
“I’ve owned several Sony DVD and Blu-ray players and the BDP-S770 is, by far, the best yet! Set-up was extremely easy; non-tech savy people shouldn’t be intimidated as this Blu-ray player walks you through set-up, even connecting to my wireless internet was simple and quick. Blu-ray performance is top-notch and DVD upconversion is excellent. Perhaps even more impressive is the Netflix streaming. I’ve watched several HD movies and television shows and the streaming quality is superior to that of most HD cable channels.” – Xavier (USA)

The BDP-S770 can upscale standard resolutions to a higher image quality during streaming video or while playing standard DVDs using Sony’s proprietary IP Content Noise Reduction technology and Precision Cinema HD Upscaling. In addition, the player will feature an Entertainment Database Browser, using Gracenote technologies, that allows users to browse details like actor and production information from a Blu-ray disc and access related content.

The BDP-S770 is also compatible with Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) devices. This allows you to wirelessly share digital photos, music, and video media from your PC using your home network. It also includes a front USB input for photo, music, and video playback and decodes all advanced audio codecs including Dolby® TrueHD, dts-HD Master Audio™, and offers bitstream out.

The start up and disc load times have also drastically improved. When the quick start feature is turned on, the player starts up from power off in less than three seconds.

The BDP-S770 supports both internal decoding and bitstream output of enhanced audio codecs, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. With these HD audio formats you get crystal clear surround sound with up to 7.1 channels of discrete audio.

I just got and set up my new Sony BDP-S770 and it delivers on all levels. The best feature for me is that it can output a 1080i picture using component video cables. I have a home theater with a Sharp Z10000u projector. I was only able to get 480p output with my previous Sony DVD/blu-ray players. The load time is so fast I couldn’t believe it. Those of you who had or have an original bluray player know about load time, It loaded Star Trek in 10 sec. The internet setup was so fast and easy and there was an update for the player when I hooked it up. The remote is east to use and the buttons are back lit which is great when watching movies in the dark. Another bonus was that Monster House 3D came free in the box, another surprise because it’s not mentioned in the player’s description. If your looking for a new blu-ray player that also does 3d with a great price THIS IS IT!!” – Stephen (USA) Amazon Verified Purchase

Wow! I can’t believe how far DVD players have come. You have the world of movies to access & download in a box. It took Sony Customer Service to help me hook up to Internet my router not the DVD player had to be adjusted. The Picture is excellent,it has very quick load time. This is a DVD Player you won’t out grow with upgrades through firmware, and 3D compatible this Bluray Player should satisfy almost any movie fan.” – F.L.Thiele (Iowa,USA)

This player will handle almost all video file types. Go to Sony and check out the owner’s guide for the full list. It’s a great player. I get 5-bar signal strength on the wireless connection while my laptop only manages 2-3 bars. Internet setup was very easy. I would have liked to be able to select a config file with the SSID and WEP code from a USB stick, but it wasn’t an onerous task to type it in using the onscreen telephone-style keypad.I’m really happy with the unit. I’ve watched a couple Blu-Rays and a number of things from NetFlix.” – Ring (USA)
