Sharp BD-HP22U

HDTV manufacturers are heavily competing to make the best high-definition displays possible to give people the true vivid colors that they want while watching TV, movies, and gaming too. But television displays aren’t enough to make the home theater complete as they need the technology of Blu-ray which delivers movies in the highest quality possible to match the quality displays. Design

The Sharp BD-HP22U comes out in a similar shape as other Blu-ray players, but the layout is quite unique in a positive way. The Sharp BD-HP22U can easily be recognized by the circle in the middle bearing the Blu-ray logo. On the right is a small info display that displays timer information along with the main buttons on the left side including the power button. To match the Sharp’s AQUOS TV, the player has a piano-black finish and maintains a pretty slim profile.

“The Aquos link works perfectly with a Sharp Aquos LC40E67U LCD TV. The TV remote will control the blueray player including some of the more advanced features such as the setup menu, negating the need to use two remotes 99% of the time. Inserting a Blue Ray disk into the player will automatically turn on the TV and a few other minor convenience features. Features

The BD-HP22U has full 1080p/24 playback of all the current Blu-ray discs which is great for an entry-level device. It even includes full support of BD-Live so any of the Internet features that are included in these Blu-ray discs can be used as well and the player even comes with a generous 2 GB internal memory for storing any downloadable content. Midrange models of competitors usually have this and come off at only 1 GB. A USB port is also present.

It also catches up with the competition by incorporating internal DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD decoding that can pass in bitstream to devices that support HDMI so the audio experience isn’t affected at all. Although it doesn’t support any of the older A/V receivers and lacks MP3 playback support, the quality is decent overall for a device under $300.

Performance

The HDMI output makes the Sharp BD-HP22U a top performer in its own level as it brings both video and audio content through the HDMI cable to the HDTV. It is capable of up-scaling to achieve full backwards compatibility so regular DVD titles can be scaled to 1080p as well. The performance is further recognized with the Quick Start technology that helps people fire up their favorite Blu-ray titles faster than most players. Tests show that Blu-ray videos can be played back in within a 10 second period.

Extra Features

Another good feature is the AQUOS Pure Mode which takes advantages of the AQUOS LINK technology to combine the best of the player with the best of the Sharp AQUOS HDTV. Color settings and picture quality are fully optimized so the best picture is displayed without much configuring.

Bottom Line

The Sharp BD-HP22U is amazingly affordable and offers plenty of modern features to the table. It also has a sleek design that matches any late Sharp AQUOS display. It still lacks some features, but remains as a top recommendation for people that wish to taste the Blu-ray technology without spending a fortune.

Also, to date no firmware update exists for this model. The picture and sound quality is great for 1080p video and up to DTSHD 7.1 audio running through my Yamaha home theater system.
