Samsung BD-P3600

Samsung is famous for its uniquely designed HDTVs and now with the Samsung BD-P3600 Blu-ray player, it is trying to make a name for itself by entering the competitive Blu-ray player market. The Samsung BD-P3600 is one of the high-end models that thrives on high video quality and at the same time, delivering a slew of features that justifies its extra cost.

Design

The BD-P3600 is a lot like the entry-level BD-P2500 in terms of glossiness with the entire design resembling a black slab with rounded corners. The disc tray is found on the left side together with the open button. The playback controls are on the top of the player which can be an inconvenience when there is a need to stack other devices on top. The clean minimalistic look makes it a great addition to any home theater especially when complemented with other glossy Samsung products.

Features

The user interface also impresses by sporting vivid colors and brilliant high definition graphics. It is possible to access the two streaming services Netflix and Pandora from there and these interfaces are even better making it a great device when surfing the Internet on the big screen. These online services can be accessed wirelessly thanks to the built-in Wi-Fi capability.

Even if the computer lacks a wireless connection, the included USB Wi-Fi dongle which originally values at around $80 provides a sure connection to the BD-P3600. The dongle sports a glossy and rounded finish as well. This connection allows the BD-P3600 to stream from any supported media formats stored on the PC including MP3s, JPEGs, and DivX files. The setup can be tricky, but it is also possible to play these formats by placing them in a USB drive and plugging it into the player.

In addition, the BD-P3600 can access BD-Live content on the newest Blu-ray discs without the need of an external storage since the player has a 1 GB built-in memory. An Ethernet connection is also an available option in case no wireless router is available.

Performance

Samsung Blu-ray models are famous for passing a variety of different tests and the BD-P3600 is definitely no exception here with it acing Silicon Optix’s HQV test suite. It also passed the Video Resolution Test and Film Resolution Test as it has no image defects and jaggies. Testing the device by playing  real movies also impressed with jag-free visuals. It even managed to overcome the speed problems that previous Samsung Blu-ray devices suffered from. DVD visuals were just as good too when played on the BD-P3600.

Bottom Line

The Samsung BD-P3600 may be pricey, but it is worth every cent. There are no major weaknesses with the player. This in addition to the great features and impressive design, makes this a wonderful buy.
