Samsung BD-P2500

DVD players are still dominating the market because they are more affordable than the higher quality Blu-ray players, but the Samsung BD-P2500 Blu-ray player offers itself to the mainstream with an attractive price tag and wide range of multimedia features that take the device beyond Blu-ray capability. In fact, the list of features is just enough to overshadow any existing DVD player because of its high quality playback features and extra online connectivity.

Design

The Samsung BD-P2500 continues the glossy tradition of its other home theater and HDTV systems by applying this glossy finish to a rather minimal player that looks pretty stylish especially when combined with other Samsung products. It is even possible to miss the black directional pad found on the right side of the player. Once the player is turned on by pressing the power button located in the lower corner, the playback controls and the LCD are immediately visible. The disc tray can be opened by pressing the lone button on the left side.

Features

The Netflix streaming capability is the BD-P2500’s strong point since it is a frequently accessed service these days. Netflix offers a fairly good selection despite the lack of wide screen content, but this feature is expected to improve in the future. Navigating the Netflix site is quite similar to the experience that the Netflix player offers so it is ideal for accessing movies quickly.

The BD-P2500 also joins the heavy competition with Profile 2.0 compliance so it can also play any Blu-ray titles that have BD-Live features. As there is no Wi-Fi built-in, the Internet can be accessed by plugging in an Ethernet cable to the device. The good news is that it has 1 GB of internal memory so a USB flash disk isn’t necessary when checking out the BD-Live content. Additional memory can be added by using the port in the back for accessing even more content conveniently.

It also stays up-to-date by adding full soundtrack support thanks to the onboard decoding capabilities of the DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD formats. This allows AV receivers both old and new to experience full resolution audio no matter what output channel is used. There is also visible support for 7.1 analog audio inputs and even an optical digital-audio output for the receivers without HDMI connections to benefit from these technologies.

Actual user review:
“First, I love this blu-ray player. Not just for the requisite amazing HD picture and sound, but for the best-in-class upscaling for plain DVDs. I thought I wouldn’t really use the additional Netflix and Pandora streaming features (a rare treat on this specific Samsung model, BD-P2500), but I have to admit, I’m hooked on those as well! Netflix movies are delivered straight to the unit (some even in HD), and Pandora Internet Radio is a dream” – T&T (CO,USA)

Performance

Another thing that makes the Samsung BD-P2500 one of the more impressive entry-level players is how well the player did against several critical tests including the Film Resolution Loss Test and Video Resolution Loss Test. Just about all the tests thrown at it resulted in no jaggies, with the only minor weakness being the slow load times.

Extra Features

In terms of image quality and performance, the Samsung BD-P2500 definitely scores high and promises a great movie experience. The extra internet features also make this player worth the mid-range price rivaling its competitors really well.

Average User Rating:

  • “This is a great Blu-Ray player for the price. It has a very high quality HQV chip that upscales standard DVDs with quality like nothing else. Blu-Ray DVDs also look and sound stunning. It has the full assemblage of outputs including digital optical, HDMI and 7.1 analog outs. And, with a firmware update, it can also do Netflix Instant Watch streaming!” – T.Tom (CA,USA)
  • “The Netflix player is the crowning jewel of this player’s features. I live in a rural area (Nearly an hour to the nearest Video Rental store) but am fortunate to have a 5 mbs internet connection. This player streams the HD content from Netflix with no problems, I have had no dropouts, pauses or bobbles after watching around 20 movies from Netflix online. I have the $8.99 plan which allows 1 disk out and unlimited streaming. It is a great deal for me considering it would cost more just to drive to the video store than the plan costs. The Netflix streaming video service allows you to explore and seek out those hidden gems that you wouldn’t necessarily find in a video store.” – D.Earl (OR,USA)
