Pioneer BDP-320

Blu-ray enabled players had to endure a rough start due to majority of consumers not having suitable HDTVs to enjoy blu-ray movies. This sparked the launch of entry-level Blu-ray players that Pioneer started getting into when Blu-ray players became popular. Now that Blu-ray widely accepted as the next-generation format, Pioneer started focusing on higher-end models like the Pioneer BDP-320 Blu-ray player which aim to deliver the highest audio and visual quality possible.

Design

The overall design of the Pioneer BDP-320 Blu-ray player is similar to the previous BDP-120. It is a slightly thicker and has the same bar that horizontally divides the player into two sections with the buttons found along the divider. The difference here is that it also borrows design elements from the older BDP-51FD, with the silver power button on the left and a matching play button on the opposite side. This gives it more room for additional playback controls like the seek function to be incorporated. The tray now lies on the top middle portion with the Blu-ray logo lies below it. The info display stays at the right most side just near the open/close button.

Features

Like the BDP-120 and other late competitors, the BDP-320 has BD-Live support, allowing it to access any Internet-enabled features that the newer Blu-ray titles include. What makes this worth the upgrade is that a USB flash disk doesn’t need to be plugged in anymore as the BDP-320 has a 1 GB storage space built-in. There is still a USB port if ever additional storage space is needed.

The audio quality remains excellent with 7.1 channel analog audio outputs so they stay compatible with devices that do not have HDMI ports. All the advanced audio formats are covered, including Dolby True HD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, and Dolby Digital Plus. It is even better if the HDMI Precision Quartz Lock System can be used in combination with a Pioneer A/V receiver so that CD music plays smoothly without jitter.

Actual user review:
“I tried out many Blu-ray players and this Pioneer Blu-ray player is the best one. It offers the best picture quality within its price range and it has an option to make the image even better with its built in picture adjustments. The analog audio outputs sound quality is excellent especially listening to audio CDs. This player has slower loading times than its competition, but its worth the wait due to its excellent picture quality.” – Gregpod (USA)

Performance

The video performance has improved with the introduction of Triple High-Definition NR which combines Component Frame NR, Block NR, and Mosquito NR to reduce the noise in a number of areas without sacrificing any picture quality. The Picture Control Suite is included to allow people to further fine-tune the visuals to suit their individual preferences.

Extra Features

The BDP-320 is much easier to use with a new graphical user interface in full HD for even easier navigation. The experience is even better when the KURO LINK Video Adjustment System is used in conjunction with a Pioneer KURO flat panel TV so the video settings are optimized for movie playback automatically.

Bottom Line

The price difference between the BDP-320 and the BDP-120 isn’t that much, though the number of features lays bare the disparity between the two. The Pioneer BDP-320 Blu-ray player has fantastic audio and visuals with an improved interface.

Average User Rating:

  • “I purchased this player because it was said to have somewhat better BD picture and audio quality than others in the same price range. I must say I am very impressed. It also seems to have better build quality than the other similar players. It loads a bit slow, but does that really matter? Not to me. As long as it does load, I am happy! And the DVD upscaling is extremely good! I am also using the analog audio outputs to my older receiver, and being able to have the player decode the new lossless audio is great. Better than any theater I’ve been in lately, and my speakers are quite low end! This is a very nice product I heartily recommend!” – M.Solera (MD,USA)
  • “I debated the need to buy a blu ray player due to the ability to download movie content from the Internet via services like Netflix. I have a Pioneer Plasma (PDP-5020FD) HDTV and a Pioneer AVR (VSX-94TXH). Obviously the Kuro link was the reason for the Pioneer blu ray over other players. I waited for the price point to drop below $300. I plugged in the Ethernet cable and the HDMI cable from the blu ray player into the AVR and wallah, instant HD experience. I tested with the Rush snakes & arrows Live blu ray disk and it was unbelievable. The HD video and audio was magnificent. Reason enough alone to justify the purchase. The defaults on the setup provided the Kuro link connectivity. My music CDs and DVD disks even seemed better with this setup. I also updated the firmware to the 3.25 with no issues. All I can say is thank you pioneer for making fabulous products.” – T.Boro(PA,USA)
