Pioneer BDP-09FD

DVD technology has been around for quite some time and has proven to be far superior to the VHS and VCD formats in terms of video and audio quality. However, with the introduction of  blu-ray high-definition technology, the popularity of HDTVs has increased greatly. With the Full 1080p HD specification found in most large screen displays, it has led to the development of more advanced blu-ray players such as the Pioneer BDP-09FD Blu-ray player.

Design

Black has always been the choice for Pioneer equipment. The  BDP-09FD retains the status quo. Because it is an Elite player, the thickness of the player is virtually doubled when compared to the ordinary Blu-ray players with the lower section having the Elite logo on the bottom and the Blu-ray disc tray bearing the Blu-ray logo on top. On the left and right sides are the most frequently used “Power” and “Play” buttons.

All of the other controls can be found on the upper section of the player, with the information display in the center bearing the same dimensions as the disc tray for a somewhat symmetrical look. With the exception of the power light indicator, all of the lights are found on the center divider strip which actually makes the conventional black glossy player even more unique.

Features

Pioneer’s Elite Series BDP-09FD is hot on features. It earns distinction as one of the first two Blu-ray players ever to earn THX certification (the other is Lexicon’s new BD-30 Blu-ray/universal player). The BDP-09FD incorporates 8 Wolfson DACs and Pioneer’s PQLS “jitter free audio transmission” system. It also features full support of BD-Live. BD-Live is the latest Profile 2.0 specification that lets the player fetch any extra features that the Blu-ray title has hosted online. Most players require a flash disk to be plugged in while others have limited memory. However, the BDP-09FD has a massive 4 GB of built-in memory to store tons of media content. A USB port isn’t even included since 4 GB is a more than sufficient memory for extra content. Internet access can be achieved by simply plugging in an Ethernet port to the player and then launching any Blu-ray title that has BD-Live support.

Pioneer products have always been well-known for their large array of connectivity options and the BDP-09FD continues the tradition by including 1 HDMI 1.3a main output and a sub output as well. Component and composite video outputs are found on the player for older devices along with an S-Video output. There are also two audio outputs with one supporting 7.1 channels and the other for 2-channels. Lastly, an RS-232C connection is present to meet the demands of people that want to use this for custom installations.

Performance

The overall set of features may not match other players in its price range, but when it comes to performance, this model blows away the competition in both audio and picture performance. Picture quality is excellent because of the three video processing chips that are integrated, allowing advanced functions like up-conversions from 8-bit to 16-bit video processing leading to over 65,536 hues. If the picture quality is not up to your satisfaction, there is the option of fine-tuning it through the various picture control options available.

Pioneer also incorporates the best audio technologies found in their popular audio players such as the built-in analog to digital converters that support dual mode operation and calibration options with 0.5 db precision. The rigid exterior also contributes to the sound performance and a dedicated analog power supply handles the audio functions while minimizing the magnetic energy.

Bottom Line

The Pioneer BDP-09FD Blu-ray player is best paired with a Pioneer KURO HDTV display. This way, the KURO Link Technology can be used to operate all the devices with a single remote. Overall, the BDP-09FD Blu-ray player is excellent in all performance areas. It should be a fine addition to any Pioneer rack and home users will love the sheer power that the BDP-09FD packs.
