Blu-ray players are constantly evolving especially since Blu-ray won the format war. Now all the major home theater developers are crafting Blu-ray players that go beyond just simple movie playback functionality. Design
The design of the Pioneer BDP-23FD Blu-ray player is roughly similar to the BDP-320 in terms of button placement and overall layout. The same black glossy finish gives the player a sleek and modern look that can match any home theater system with a noticeable line dividing the system across in half. The activity indicator lies at the center, with the disc tray on top bearing the Blu-ray logo. The info display on the far right now displays yellow text instead of white as in previous models. On the far left are the standard playback buttons along the line which are clearly indicated for access. The bottom part of the player features the “power” and “play” buttons. This design is therefore extremely user-friendly.
Features
The BDP-23FD carries just about all the features found in all the affordable models including the Profile 2.0 compatibility which allows any Internet features found on the BD-Live supported titles to be accessed. All the content can be stored on the onboard 1 GB storage memory or optionally on any USB flash drive plugged into the USB 2.0 port. The USB terminal also supports HDD support to enjoy the BD-Live features without hassle.
The multi-channel Precision Quartz Locking System is also present for jitter-free quality for audio playback when synced between the player and a Pioneer-branded AV receiver. This is also combined with the onboard decoding support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS- HD Master Audio along with the other Dolby formats.
Performance
Deep Color achieves its perfection utilizing full 48-bit power which will have more attention when future Blu-ray titles take advantage of it. The Advanced Picture Control Suite even grants greater control over the image quality no matter what HDTV is being used. Full HD 1080p picture is output at an amazing True 24fps for excellent real-time experience.
Actual user review:
“Stylish, beautifull design, tray opens in silence quietly, gently like a queen. Video and music reproduction is superb, but you must hook it up to a monster receiver like Pioneer Elite SC27 to fully enjoy its own potential. Over the years I learned that every piece of you equipment must be of equal quality, otherwise something will be missing.” – R.Fernandez (FL,USA)
Extra Features
Exclusive to the BDP-23FD is the RS-232C connection which grants custom installations that expand beyond the functions of a standard Blu-ray player. The KURO LINK adjustment system makes setup with KURO Pioneer displays easier by automatically tweaking the settings for the best image possible.
Bottom Line
The Pioneer BDP-23FD Blu-ray player boasts amazing technology in all departments. It is also very easy to setup, has a great interface, and the added RS-232C makes it exclusively designed for the custom installer market and hardcore Blu-ray users.
