Panasonic DMP-BD80
Panasonic has been a leader in home electronics and home theater systems for quite awhile. Previously, it introduced the DMP-BD35 which saw great success and now the Panasonic DMP-BD80 Blu-ray player hopes to do the same by offering improved features. It positions itself in the family of other Panasonic Blu-ray players as a midrange model that has plenty of nice features and the same superior image and sound quality that made the DMP-BD35 great.

Design
The overall design of the DMP-BD80 looks strikingly similar to the other DMP-BD models by Panasonic which all adopt the same basic style. Of course with the Blu-ray and BD-Live logos, the DMP-BD80 is a recent model.
There is a small compartment on the right that reveals some basic playback buttons, a USB 2.0 port, and a SDHD card slot. The back side contains other connections including the Ethernet and HDMI ports. It isn’t the sleekest player out there, but it will match any home theater system nicely.
Performance
Just like the other Blu-ray players by Panasonic, the DMP-BD80 excels greatly in image quality. Anyone hoping to make the most out of their existing Blu-ray collection is in for a real treat because images remain crisp and clean without any need for tweaking the options. It does a great job with the noise and jaggies reduction and the 1080p full HD specification combined with the Profile 2.0 support make it excellent for watching the latest Blu-ray movies. It also handles standard DVDs nicely by upscaling the SD imagery and enhancing their picture quality.
On the audio side, the DMP-BD80 further enhances the audio experience with 7.1 channel analog out to produce true 7.1 surround sound. It can decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio and offer 7.1 analogue sound output. This is useful for those have older home theater receivers that do not have these audio decoding capabilities. It supports MP3 as well in addition to the DivX and AVCHD video standards. The DMP-BD80 further enhances the audio experience with 7.1 channel analog out to produce true 7.1 surround sound, thereby ensuring the consumer a home theater environment that can easily rival a movie theater.
Actual user review:
“The quality of the player is just what I expected from what I had read before on the Blu Ray player, the quality of the blu-ray movies is extremely good and the quality of the normal DVD movies is also much better than any other DVD player I had before. I played same movie on this player (DMP-BD80) and also watched the same movie on my old Sony player and the difference is very dramatic, I had no idea the colors would be that much better and everything looks sharper too, something that I never thought possible, I am a quality freak so I really look around before buying. “ – J.Tapia (MO,USA)
Technology
The fact that the DMP-BD80 supports BD-Live or Profile 2.0 means that it can access any Internet features that some of the newer Blu-ray titles have. The VieraCast technology provides the interface and it looks nice complete with YouTube support for watching the newest clips online and Picasa for viewing any stored photos in Google’s popular image hosting service. It is also possible to check out the latest weather updates and stock information easily through VieraCast. The Amazon Video On-Demand service can be accessed from the player too.
It is also backed with the PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus which is responsible for individually processing each pixel ensuring that the color data is as accurate as possible to produce vivid and sharp images.
Bottom Line
The DMP-BD80 may not be the fastest and most stylish player out there, but its reasonable price coupled with great internet features and outstanding image and sound quality make this a delicious deal.
