Oppo BDP-95
Oppo Digital has just announced the detailed specs and features for its upcoming flagship, Oppo BDP-95. It is Oppo’s most ambitious product till date with features that will cause home theater enthusiasts and audiophiles to salivate. The BDP-95 is a full 3D universal blu-ray player capable of playing all known disc formats. Although it shares the same playback platform as the BDP-93, it is designed from the ground up with a heavier chassis and many different components optimized for the analog audio performance.

Design
The BDP-95 is bigger and heavier than previous models. It weighs in at 16 lbs (7.3Kg) due in part to the custom designed toroidal power transformer. Toroidal transformers are more efficient and has less mechanical hum than the cheaper traditional laminated steel core transformers providing a clean and robust power source to critical audio components.
Oppo has given the player a good dose of cosmetic treatment deviating from the usual straight lines with a curvaceous front panel. Layout is neat and functional. The disc tray sits in the center with display and control buttons by its side.
Back Panel Connectivity

Back Panel Connectivity Options
The back panel comprises a comprehensive array of outputs and network connectivity options. What’s most prominent is that Oppo has included a pair of balanced XLR audio outputs and dedicated stereo RCA outputs for high performance analog audio. The balanced output features a true differential signal path all the way from the DAC to the 3-pin XLR connector. By transmitting a pair of differential signals, the balanced output provides better common-mode noise rejection and improves signal quality. These stereo channels are driven by optimized SABRE32 Reference ES9018 DACs from ESS Technology.
Also of note are two assignable HDMI ver1.4a outputs allowing you versatility in wiring up your system. For those with pre-3D HDMI v1.1-v1.3 AV receivers, simply connect one of the HDMI outputs to the 3D display and the other to the AV receiver for audio decoding. You can also connect one output to a projector for home theater use and the other to a HDTV for casual viewing. For a multi-room installation the BDP-95 can output audio and video to two 3D or 2D TVs simultaneously.
A full set of 7.1 multi channel analog outputs are also provided. These outputs are also powered by the ES9018 SABRE32 Reference DAC.
The rest of the connections covering the bottom half of the back panel include optical/coaxial digital outs, a LAN port, composite and component video outs, a USB port, and an eSata port to play contents from external hard drives. In addition there is also a fan. It runs somewhat hotter due to all the high performance parts and the toroidal transformer.
Features
Although the Oppo BDP-95 comes with all the latest bells and whistles, it is primarily designed to be a player that excels in its core function of extracting every bit of information from the spinning disc within, and delivering it in the purest form to downstream components. To this end, Oppo has employed the use of the SABRE32 Reference ES9018 Audio DAC from ESS Technology to achieve the highest possible performance level that will satisfy even the most demanding audio enthusiast. It uses two ES9018 DAC chips – one for the 7.1-channel output, and another for the dedicated stereo output.
A Toroidal Power Supply, custom designed and built by Rotel provides robust power source to critical audio components internally so that delicate signals can be driven cleanly with minimal distortion.
It is a true universal player that plays 3D and 2D blu-ray discs, CDs, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio and SACDs. It will decode the lossless codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio for high definition entertainment. The BDP-95 outputs both these hi-res formats via its HDMI 1.4a output in bit-stream form.
In the video department the BDP-95 incorporates Marvell’s Kyoto-G2 video processor with the second generation Qdeo™ technology. Qdeo video processing delivers an immersive viewing experience by rendering quiet natural video free of noise and artifacts for all types of content. For high-quality Blu-ray content, the BDP-95 faithfully reproduces the program just as the director intended. For DVD, the up-converted picture quality approaches HD video quality. For network streaming and user-encoded content, the BDP-95 offers enhancement options including video noise reduction, compression artifact reduction, intelligent color, contrast, detail and edge enhancements.
Using the included wireless-N adapter or the built-in RJ45 Ethernet port, you will be able to interact with BD-Live content and watch instant streaming programs from providers such as Netflix and Blockbuster. You can also play contents stored on your home network.
Conclusion
The Oppo is one of the most well thought out player we have seen. In line with its tradition, Oppo has placed a lot of emphasis in delivering top notch video and audio performance. Given its pedigree we expect this player to outperform anything we have seen so far.
