Design

The LG BD690 sheds its old conservative look in favor of a modern and sleek design. With a drop door feature, the face of it looks much cleaner and less cluttered. Behind the drop door hides the disc tray as well as the pause, play buttons. It may not be the smallest or the slimmest blu-ray player in the market, but it is solid and sturdy.

Performance

Using one of the most demanding 3D blu-ray title, TRON: Legacy 3D, we pushed the LG BD690 to its limits. We’re glad to report that the BD690 handled it with absolute ease.

First up, 3D elements were wonderfully executed. Effects were not gimmicky but were so realistic, as evidenced in scenes where discs were seemingly thrown out of the screen. We could not help but dodge it. Images were stunning and created an incredibly lifelike world that offered a different dimension. Despite the overwhelming hues of blues, blacks, bright colors stood out with its attractive dynamism against the darkness. Black levels were fantastic and so were the shadow details. Overall the sheer complicity of the film did not hinder the BD690’s ability to display it brilliantly.

The excellence of its video performance was well accompanied by the clarity of the audio. With the DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack, the incredible realism sound effects, such as when light cycles zoomed by was brought to life. Music was boisterous and audio presentation was in perfect tandem with the picture. Bass pumped out aggressively when it needed to be. Dialog was centered and delivered very audibly.

2D performance was equally impressive. On the blu-ray release of the Disney movie Up, picture quality was jaw dropping, in particular the spectacular background. Detail was intricate even to the most minor of details. Individual strands of Carl’s white hair, fuzz on the tennis ball and flora in the jungle could be viewed with pristine clarity. Colors were rich, vibrant, while black levels were deep and inky.

Bottom Line

The LG BD690 has set the bar high with its stellar cast of avant-garde features. It also demonstrates a harmonious bridge between old and new features. Not only did it match the high expectations set by its predecessor; the BD690 has taken it to a whole new level. LG has once again proven its worth as one of the market leaders, as if it needed another reminder.
