Performance
To test how well the LG BD670 performs its 3D duties, we used the blu-ray release of A Christmas Carol in 3D. Not only does it merely carry out its job, it delivers with aplomb.
The detailing is done so intricately that they are spellbinding. For a movie where much of its scenes take place in the dark, the BD670 still manages to outline the different gradations of black, which is especially critical in this case. The Scrooges’ heavily creased skin, the unevenness of the brick surface and even the finest ridges on a sheet of paper was vividly captured. Despite the lack of bright colors in the movie, the responsiveness of the color to lighting conditions was still excellent. The BD670’s impressive 3D performance was well documented with the transparent ghost of Marley, which is by far one of the most challenging yet interesting imagery. The stunning realism of depth was also shown when snowflakes were floating in various depths.
With a tremendous 3D visual performance, only a top notch sound quality could do it justice. Thankfully, the BD670’s decoding of DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack was well up to the task. Sound effects such as creaking doors and chains being dragged across the floor was delivered on the wide soundstage. Dialog was perfectly audible and comprehensible. Bass was also well controlled when sound effects became heavier.
For the 2D version of A Christmas Carol, the image quality is as spectacular as its 3D sibling. Be it the precise texture on the bricks and wood or the wrinkles, freckles on the Scrooge, every minor detail is crystal clear. The lack of bright colors in this dark film does not dampen the fact the transfer handles every hue. Blacks were honest and in perfect tandem in every scene. Overall, the BD670 makes for mesmerizing experience, be it 2D or 3D.
Bottom Line
With the LG BD670, LG looks set to put its stamp on the 3D blu-ray market. The BD670’s impressive ability to play 3D movies and its wide assortment of appealing features makes it a highly desirable 3D blu-ray player.
Actual User Reviews:
• “BD670 plays blu rays with no issues. Load time is quick. For less demanding discs load time from inserting disc to title screen took ~1 min and for BD Java heavy discs took about 1 min 45sec. Since I have a pioneer plasma, I’ve set playback at 24hertz with no issues. Picture and sound quality are excellent.
I mainly bought this player though for network streaming support. So far I have played AVI and MKV files with no problems. Playback is snappy and I was impressed with both picture and sounds quality. BD670 offers dual band frequencies so if your loved ones are using bandwidth, your bluray player can still remain smooth by using the other frequency (assuming your router also has dual band capabilities). Caution to heavy Quicktime users, the player cannot play files with the extension MOV. MP3 and photos have played without a hitch.” – B.Ball (USA)
• “Purchased this for its streaming capabilities using dual-band technology, in lieu of having both a Roku box & Blu-ray player, which we have on our second TV. The BD 670 is not a disappointment. We stream via dual-band from the far end of the house & do not detect any streaming issues. Would be nice to know the quality of the playback, as mentioned by another reviewer, but oh well. Blu-ray playback is great. The menu is a bit tedious as there are multiple layers that must be gone through to reach streaming options. In particular, it would be nice to have greater control over the placement of most used services, ie Netflix, to make the unit a bit easier to use. That said our 9 and 10 year olds can navigate to Netflix on their own and watch movies. Hopeful that other services, including Amazon VOD, will be added soon. I would probably purchase this unit again.” – R.Wilson (USA)
