Not contended with simply making its mark with its 2D blu-ray players, the LG BD650 fortifies LG’s serious intent into competing in the 3D market. With the success of its predecessor, the BD590, the BD650 had big shoes to fill. And it does not disappoint. The 3D feature denotes a crucial and massive step forward in order for LG to stay relevant.

The BD650 highlights major improvements such as the next generation Smart TV and the ability to play 3D movies in full HD 1080p. These appealing new features, together with LG’s signature crystal clear image quality, define the BD650 as a solid blu-ray player.

Design & Connectivity

The matte black LG BD650 may not be a head turner, but its compact and slim silhouette conserves space. Weighing in at a mere 2 pounds, it is very light and portable. Buttons such as play, pause, eject functions are easily accessible on the front panel or through the intuitive remote.

Connectivity options are basic but adequate. You get one HDMI output, one composite video out, stereo analog audio out, an optical digital audio output, 2 USB ports (1 front and 1 rear), and an Ethernet port. For wireless connectivity you’ll need to get an external adaptor (sold separately). If you need built-in Wi-fi you are better off getting the BD670.

Performance

Did LG’s first foray into 3D territory succeed with the LG BD650? Using Step Up 3D, we gave it a thorough workout.

First off, boot-up is lightning fast and the slide out tray opens very quickly to load your movies. Disc load time is a marked improvement over last year’s players. The BD650 delivered an outstanding performance in its first attempt. 3D elements were excellent. Characters were spaced apart naturally and nicely fitted against the background with a good amount of depth. 3D effects, such as when balloons floated ahead of the screen or when the dancers’ showcase of moves seemed to protrude out, gave it an immersive dimension. Detailing was good as seen from the nuances on the bricks and buildings.

The BD650’s impressive audio performance was a fitting complement to its video quality. With the DTS-HD MA 5.1 lossless soundtrack on board, audio quality was immaculate, in particular the bass. It reverberated robustly but yet sounded unpretentious and sleek. It thumped out appropriately in dance sequences and together with the cool dance moves, gave an engaging experience. Sound effects were strong and dialog with clearly audible.

The BD650 continued to maintain the hallmarks of a great blu-ray player with its 2D experience. Using Knight and Day, images were crisp and sharp. Textures were excellent and Diaz’s flawless skin was highly visible. Colors were breathtaking, especially in a scene where a car chase took place amidst charging bulls. Multi colored tiles were simply eye catching too. Rounding off, black levels were deep, skin tones were natural and contrast was great.

Bottom Line

The LG BD650 may not have been the first to jump on the 3D bandwagon, but it is definitely no slouch in that department. The BD650 has managed to build on the success of its predecessor by retaining some of the popular features and correspondingly, adding on fresh new features that will make it future proof at least for the next few years.
