Design

The BD570 looks attractive and high tech with its glossy front panel. It is slim and occupies a small footprint measuring just 1.7 inches tall by 8 inches deep allowing it to easily fit in with your home theater system.

The power and eject buttons are conveniently located on top. The front panel automatically flips down when the disc tray is ejected. Under the front panel are playback buttons, chapter forward/backward, and a USB port. Once powered on, the front LCD display is bright and clearly readable from across the room.

At the back you get the a HDMI output, component and composite video outs, digital audio outs, 2 channels of analog audio and an Ethernet port. Unlike last year’s BD390, the BD570 lacks 7.1 analog outputs, a trend we will see continuing on mass-market players.  Like nearly all Blu-ray players available now, the BD570 is capable of internally decoding lossless codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio and you have the option of sending it via HDMI as lossless bitstream or PCM.

Features

LG was the first to release a networked blu-ray player with Netflix streaming (BD300) and has upped the ante with its latest player by adding convenient access to a virtually endless array of online entertainment options. With its own NetCast Entertainment Access you get instant streaming from Netflix, CinemaNow, VUDU and YouTube plus an impressive lineup of services from Picasa, Pandora and weather forecasts from AccuWeather. However, Amazon Video-on-Demand is not one of those supported services.

To take full advantage of the Blu-ray format, the BD570 also provides convenient access to BD Live, which offers a wide variety of content, such as movie scene extras, new previews and the ability to read synopses and rate movies. Also included are Bonus View features which provide picture-in-picture access to Blu-ray Disc special features, allowing you to toggle between your favorite movie scenes and bonus features on the disc.

New Remote Control

New LG Remote

For the first time in any home Blu-ray product, the Gracenote’s MusicID-Stream™ allows you to hear a song playing in a movie or TV show by simply pressing a button on their remote control. Gracenote then returns rich information on the song, such as artist and genre, along with album cover art. Photos or personal videos that may have been scattered throughout the home on PCs or digital cameras can now be simply imported via the USB or Ethernet port to create a single organized library of personal memories.

You also have built-in high speed 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity. This makes it very convenient to stream HD movies from VUDU or CinemaNow.

DLNA functionality expands entertainment options by enabling easier access to family videos and pictures stored on other DLNA-enabled systems, allowing you to view your pictures and videos on you big screen.

LG has also improved on the design of the remote. There is now an easy to find ‘ridge’ to aid in finding the most used buttons in the dark. Buttons are large and generally well laid out. However it lacks backlighting.

Actual user review:
“We bought this blu-ray player for our living room. We wanted a standalone player that could also stream netflix. This player could not be easier to setup and the amount of features that they pack into this thing is crazy. It does everything you could want and more. Netflix playback is flawless and works much better then using an xbox which we were using before. Usually a netflix video takes about 30 seconds to start playing and never stops to buffer while watching. Youtube is also easy to use and navigate and their videos also play just as you would hope they would. Bluray playback is outstanding as well as standard DVDs. I also updated the firmware and it installed with no problems at all. I wish all bluray players could say the same about their updates.” – E.Lamaide (USA)

Setup & Performance

The graphical interface has gone through a major revamp with new floating icons that look like ice cubes. However if you are upgrading from the BD390 the setup process is quite identical and should not pose any problems even for the first time user. Getting the wireless connection going is relatively quick and easy, so is the firmware upgrade. If you prefer to use the wired option just connect it to the LAN port on the back panel. However be aware that the player’s video resolution is set to 1080i by default, so be sure to check that and change it to 1080p if you have your HDTV is full hi-def.

LG’s major strength is in networking features and streaming media services. They have expanded on this capability with smooth execution of their NetCast feature. Netflix, YouTube, VUDU and Pandora worked perfectly straight out of the box.

The BD570 do not have the quick start feature of current Sony and Panasonic players. So disc load times are somewhat slower. Casino Royale loads in a quick 16 secs while the Java intensive Pirates of the Caribbean blu-ray disc loads in about 24 secs compared to 16 secs on the Sony BDP-S470 (with quick start enabled). Still considered reasonably quick for this notoriously slow loading disc.

First off, the BD570 passed all of the de-interlacing tests on the Spears and Munsil High Definition Benchmark Blu-ray test disc without a problem.

Picture quality on Casino Royale blu-ray was excellent with good color saturation and jaw-dropping detail. Brightly lit scenes has good image depth and gorgeous detail reproduction. Night scenes and dim interiors were rendered with fine gradations of gray and black without losing detail.

Its audio performance was equally impressive with excellent details, clear dialogs and wide dynamic range. The uncompressed 5.1-channel PCM soundtrack was reproduced with all of the textures and dynamics of the film, from soft pillow talk to gunfire and exploding buildings.

The only downside to the BD570’s video performance is its upscaling ability on DVD. Images on DVD are warm with a slight reddish hue and overall color lacks vibrancy.

Bottom Line

The LG BD570 offers a neat hi-def playback solution for those who have an HDMI-equipped receiver. It has useful set of networking features and a robust suite of NetCast streaming services wrapped in a very cost effective package. Highly recommended.

Actual User Reviews:I did a lot of research before getting the BD570 and it was well worth the time I spent! This is about half the size of the Samsung Blu-ray player that I replaced this with. Set up in very very easy and even with wireless network, which took less than 3 minutes to set up, the video streaming quality from Netflix is amazing. For wireless setup, you basically go to the Setup menu, select “Wireless” and it instantaneously finds all networks available. Setting up Netflix was equally easy. You go to Netflix menu and it generates a code. You enter the code in your Netflix, using computer and in abut 5 seconds your queue shows up on TV. Want to find a different movie? Go to your computer and add one, or search on the LG menu on your TV and you are set. Those movies that are marked “HD” truly look like HD. This was an area of concern for me: streaming speed. But I could hardly tell that this was not playing from a Blu-ray disc. You will not be disappointed at all! ” – K.S. (WA,USA)

Works great right out of the box like everyone says. Don’t forget to check 1080p if that’s your thing. The guide says it’s supposed to be able to rip CDs onto external storage, this did not work for me but I did not spend any time trying to figure it out. Netflix works great. Home media sharing works but is a bit slow seemingly. Plays Blu-ray and every DVD I have thrown at it just great.” – B.Ludden (NC,USA)

I bought this LG BD570, after reading positive reviews of its previous models. It was kind of gamble at the time since there wasn’t enough information available online about this particular model. I am glad to report that it is way better than my expectations. The value it adds is way more than its price. The setup was as easy as it gets. I work in IT but one of my friends also ordered it and she is not technically savvy at all, she was able to set up Wi-Fi without any issues. Netflix and YouTube work seamlessly on our FiOS network. Vudu is great and offers new HD movies at half the price of FiOS VOD. This player has changed dynamics of TV entertainment in our house and has become most used device in our home.” – S.Ahtasham (TX,USA)
