LG BD390

Ever since blu-ray triumphed over HD-DVD, an increasing number of blu-ray players are emerging in the mainstream market. The LG BD 390 Blu-ray player however, takes Blu-ray technology to a whole new level with a great set of Blu-ray dedicated features.

Design

Unlike many of the other LG products that have looks beyond expression, the LG BD 390 sports a somewhat standard look that is fresh and refined. The faceplate on the front is coated with a glossy black finish that allows for colour variation and is lined with a strip of silver metal that enhances the overall design. There are four playback controls easily found on the right side and a latch housing the sole USB 2.0 port, allowing for easy USB connection.

Features

The LG BD 390 begins with a very simple and eye-catching interface. Just looking at the interface gives you an idea of the main features of the LG BD 390. The home menu clearly illustrates that it fully supports YouTube along with two popular streaming services – Netflix and CinemaNow. The other icons lead to the Movie, Photo, and Music sections which are pretty straightforward. The remaining icon leads to the player setup. The YouTube interface impresses by making it easy to browse the top videos and search for any videos for playback in full screen. With integrated Wi-Fi, it is really easy to have the player access the Internet if a home wireless connection is present.

This connectivity gives way to the BD-Live support allowing the LG BD 390 to take advantage of the Internet features found on some of the newer Blu-ray discs. Whereas the BD370 lacks internal memory and only allows for a hard-wired connection to your network, the BD390 offers Wi-Fi support and 1GB of onboard memory, as well as 7.1-channel analog audio outputs. The option of the USB port is there for connection with other media including MP3, JPEG, DivX, MKV and WMA. The wireless connectivity enables the capability to stream any shared movie files from PC sources, making it an excellent multimedia device. A LAN port is also provided if, for some reason, you don’t want to use Wi-Fi.

This player packs full onboard decoding support for DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD so there should be no problem when it comes to playing soundtrack formats on HDMI-capable AV receivers including the legacy formats too.

Actual user review:
“First, let me state that I am not an expert. Just an average consumer. I just received this player about two weeks ago. It shipped quickly and was in perfect condition on arrival. Set up was easy and I had no problems. I was able to connect to my wireless network easily. I just entered my password and it connected. I have it connected to a SONY KDL-40S4100 40 inch LCD HD TV. The Blue-Ray discs load quickly (about the same amount of time it took for my regular DVD player to load). Image quality is incredible with the blue ray discs and my old DVDs look a lot better on this player. I have a slow DSL connection but I don’t have any problem playing YouTube videos and Netflix movies. My connection is too slow for HD movies or cinema now movies. I will probably upgrade my DSL. I would highly recommend this player based on ease of use and quality of the images.” – J.Barker (NC,USA)

Performance

This model has performed well against other top range Blu-ray players. Overall, the BD390 offers excellent image quality on Blu-ray discs. Color is rich with fine detail resolution. Moving images with fine details are rendered without jaggies and more. The same goes with the DVD tests which the 2:3 pull-down processing test handled with no problems. DVD movie playback looked crisp and detailed and all but the pickiest videophiles will be satisfied with the BD390′s DVD performance.

Perhaps the most notable performance feat is the surprisingly fast load times of both Blu-ray and DVD titles. It loads blu-ray discs (without BD-live content) in just 11 seconds.

Bottom Line

The LG BD 390 ranks extremely well on quality, performance and connectivity. Its design is both sleek and classy. Even though the price is near identical to Sony’s Playstation 3, the LG BD 390 is one of the top blu-ray players out there that will give multimedia enthusiasts an excellent experience and an absolute bang for their buck.

Average User Rating:

  • “I’ve been waiting for a blu-ray player that has Netflix capability with wi-fi, and this one delivers. It’s relatively easy to set up, and quite straight-forward to use. The video quality on a 1080p screen is spectacular, and the ability to stream content from Netflix, without the hassle of running cables is what got me to buy this now, rather than wait for the inevitable price drops. If, like me, you’re not tremendously tech-capable, allow a few hours to sort out all the set up. I had trouble getting the wi-fi to connect, but it all worked as advertised. ” – B.Davis (CA,USA)
  • “This is my first Blu-Ray Player. I only have 1080i (50 in Panasonic Plasma) resolution on my set. I am very pleased with the picture and vastly improved audio over my previously hooked up Sony DVD Upconvert player when playing a Blu-Ray title. Setup was a breeze. Very happy with the Netflix/Watch It now functions. Overall, a great purchase.” – B.Yesner (NJ,USA)
