LG BD370

Now that the Blu-ray high-definition format remains as the only HD standard, companies are refining their Blu-ray players to incorporate more features. The LG BD370 Blu-ray player is one of the devices that fall in the category of next generation Blu-ray players.

LG was one of the first to build Internet-enabled VOD into a product when it partnered with Netflix to add the “Watch Instantly” function to last year’s LG BD300 Blu-ray player. The Netflix feature is now beginning to appear in quite many products; so, to further distinguish its ‘networked’ player, LG is taking the concept one step further by adding YouTube playback and future support for the CinemaNow VOD service. The LG BD 370 tries to add more without bumping up the price too much, thus serving as a worthy alternative to the fully featured LG BD 390.

Design

Although there is another LG BD Network 390 model, the 370 bears an entirely different look even when compared to other conventional players. One thing worth pointing out is the lack of any exposed disc tray. It does retain the standard rectangular base, but a silver square is situated on the center of the player with a silver circle serving as the “Power” button. The front panel automatically flips down when the tray opens revealing some basic playback buttons and the USB 2.0 port. The remote is also unique designed with the advanced buttons hidden so the remote remains simple and at the same time advanced for users that wish to slide down the cover.

Features

LG has made a name for itself in the Blu-ray department with user friendly interfaces that are easy to navigate especially on large displays. Each of the high definitions icons on the home menu lead to a certain feature of the player like the Audio, Image, and Video buttons that access their respective functions. There are a few Internet-specific functions as well including connectivity to Netflix and YouTube online services provided the Ethernet cable is plugged in. Browsing these services is simple and fun, which makes this a great player for people that have a home Internet connection.

The viewing the player from the top can give you the rundown of other features that it supports including the Profile 2.0 compatibility so all the Internet features in selected Blu-ray titles can be accessed. Unlike the 390 model, there is no internal storage memory, requiring a USB storage device to be plugged in before accessing any BD-Live content.

The logos also include both the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio which defines its capability of decoding any soundtrack formats which is required for AV receivers with HDMI capability.

Actual user review:
“I have never written a review before on Amazon, but this product just blows me away. I would highly recommend anyone that is looking for a blu-ray player get this one from LG. It has so many amazing features. Two is the streaming of Netflix and Youtube. I was suspicious on how good this would look, but it looks just amazing. I think it is worth it just for that alone. All the content you can get from Netflix and Youtube can keep you entertained for months, weeks, days, etc.” – Shane (Chicago, USA)

Performance

The LG BD 370 didn’t perform as well on tests as compared to other Blu-ray players, but the image quality is still exceptional and can even be difficult to tell the difference when watching certain material. The appearance of jaggies really varies from scene to scene, but the very fast load times make up for the slightly toned down video quality.

Bottom Line

The BD 370 is a great budget player for people that want more out of the Internet capabilities as the user interface and browsing experience are its greatest strengths. It may fall slightly under with the video quality, but it is still a solid player that gets the job done in all areas.

Average User Rating:

  • “The best thing about this product is it simply works, and works simply. Installation couldn’t have been easier with my LG HD TV. One HDMI cable is all you need to connect it, and all the video settings were set perfectly right from the start. Setting up access to my NetFlix account simply involved entering a four letter code off the NetFlix website, the entire process took all of 30 seconds. The quality of the streaming videos is better than off my PC, and provides the added convenience of a remote control. The all the menus are straight forward and intuitive. I have not yet needed to open my owner’s manual.” – Cerick (USA)
  • “I was in the market for a dvd player, and found this. It took about 15 minutes to set up, and then 30 minutes of updates once it was hooked up to my internet. The player works like a charm, and the picture and sound quality are phenomenal. The Netflix compatibility with my account is such an incredible feature. This piece of equipment really floored me.” – J.G. Harrington (MA,USA)
