Denon DVD-2500BTCI
Blu-ray players come in different sizes with a variety of features. The Denon DVD-2500BTCI Blu-ray player was one of the earliest and largest Blu-ray players. Dubbed as a Blu-ray Transport by Denon, this device is designed so that the AVR-2808CI conveniently stacks on top or below the player for a classic home theater setup. This Denon device is one of the early Blu-ray players that is responsible for taking the blu-ray HD format mainstream.

Design
At first glance, the design resembles any classic home audio player, but the Blu-ray logo found on the tray indicate that it is a Blu-ray disc player. The important playback controls are present with a display showing basic playback information. The real simplicity of the player can be found on the back where there is nothing but an HDMI out, an AC IN, and a RS-232 input so it can connect to the other Denon equipment. This means extremely easy setup at the cost of compatibility with older TVs.
Actual user review:
“I cannot say anything else but WOW what an excellent Bluray player this is. Denon went all the way as far as performance and quality. It makes your Blu-ray movies come alive even more. I am using a Denon AVR-2808CI receiver and both work like magic together. If you want a very well built Bluray player for the amazing price of under $500 this is the one for you. Highly recommended to anyone who wants the best in bluray playback.” – Levi (USA)
Features
Since the DVD-2500BTCI was introduced in 2008, there are no BD-Live features which aren’t really a big deal if you do not require accessing the extra internet content . It still manages to be Blu-ray Profile 1.1 compliant, which is one of the earliest devices to achieve and has Picture-in-Picture interactive capabilities which are frequently utilized by Bonus Views. It is even possible to use the SD card slot for storing added content. Playing back MP3s, JPEGs, and WMAs are supported as well.
At the time of its launch, the Denon DVD-2500BTCI was one of the first players to support bitstream transmission of the DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD codecs which are both lossless codecs. There is, however, no onboard decoding for the older receivers, but it is best to use the AVR02808CI as previously recommended. It can still decode Dolby Digital Plus at full resolution and PCM channels up to 7.1.
Performance
Back then, the Playstation 3 was considered the fastest in terms of transport speed, but the Denon DVD-2500BTCI took just half the time in accessing discs compared to the other standalone models. Accessing the disc menus is also more convenient with this player.
1080p/60 and 1080p/24 output resolutions are fully supported although it fails to provide a decent video-processing solution when a pure video output isn’t available. But the video playback performance impresses nevertheless when it comes to Full HD as no pixels are left out and the full dynamic range was attained using the standard HDMI output mode. There are some minor issues with the DVD playback, but this is a player that is meant for Blu-ray discs so it is best to have a separate Denon player for standard DVD playback.
Bottom Line
This is the best player to get when complemented with the AVR-2808CI. Though not up-to-date with the newer models, this plays blu-ray movies just as well. For those that simply want to enjoy the movie content, this model is great value for money.

- “This is by far one of the best Blu ray players on the market. The picture is stunning and has a very cinematic, non-analytical image. This blows away the similar Sony 2000ES. As this is only a transport, it has no analog audio outputs, the sound is amazing when paired with a HD-format audio decoding receiver. This is definitely a great unit for the money. Get ready to be amazed.” – K.Leonard (NY,USA)
- “I finally buy Denon’s DVD-2500BTCI. It’s called a TRANSPORT unit because it is a pure 100% digital-only player. If you don’t have HDMI to HDMI only, move-on. Stunning color quality! Unlike anything I’ve ever seen. One more time: STUNNING PICTURE & COLOR quality. Better yet, this thing weighs something! Turn it on and it quickly responds (a major Blu-Ray issue is LAG). Yes, once you insert the BLU-RAY disc, it does take ime to load. That’s normal but everything else makes the ‘2500′ the fastest of Blu-Ray players ever that I have used/tested/played with. I think the REMOTE is excellent! Others do not and Denon does have a reputation for lousy remotes. This one is an exception. Well worth the money. Really! “ – Jonathon (CA,USA)
