Denon DVD-1800BD

Price was always an issue with Blu-ray players especially when the technology was still new, but the Denon DVD-1800BD Blu-ray player was one of the earliest models priced at under $1000 and paved the way for many other premium Blu-ray players. The added firmware updates give additional value to one of the least-expensive Blu-ray players in Denon’s lineup at the time.

Design

Not only does the Denon DVD-1800BD manage to cut the price down compared to the DVD-2500BTCI,  it also manages to reduce the weight and overall size as well. The legs clearly indicate that it can still stack with other Denon equipment to form a classic stereo layout. Consumers can choose either black or white models to better match other components.

The tray is located on the left side just like other DVD players and the small display and playback controls on right balance the player aesthetically. Although there is no USB port, there is still an SD card slot on the far right granting playback features.

Features

The DVD-1800BD is designed as an entry-level model so there aren’t many additional new features that many players on the market now possess.  However,  the Profile 1.1 compliance is still worth noting which is just enough for the Bonus View PIP features to be enjoyed. Although the newer models support Profile 2.0, that profile is only necessary to check out the BD-Live features found on newer discs which may not be needed for people that just want to enjoy the movie.

Regarding the audio features, the DVD-1800BD does support a number of the latest high resolution audio formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks as well. Using the SD card slot, it is capable of playing any MP3 or WMA files in addition to video and image formats including DivX 6 and JPEG files.

The picture quality also excels and can be adjusted on any supported TV using a variety of picture adjustment controls. Gamma controls can also be adjusted to get the desired deep blacks even if the TV underperforms in that area. Both deinterlacing and upscaling are supported as well to give way to some of the older formats and allow standard DVD playback.

Performance

The performance of the DVD-1800BD excels just like the other models with minimal waiting time being the player’s greatest strength. Navigating the menus are pretty snappy and firing up the disc can take less than a minute to load which is reasonably fast compared to the rest of the players at that time. The upscaling feature also passed some significant tests, like the Film Resolution Loss test.

Bottom Line

There is nothing mind-blowing or exceptional about the Denon DVD-1800BD. It is reasonably fast with disc loading and plays a blu-ray movie just as well as other newer players. The main difference would be that it does not support any internet functions and features that come with some newer blu-ray discs.  For those that simply want to enjoy the movie, this would be just fine while also a perfect addition to any Devon branded setup.
