Denon DBP-4010UDCI
Hot on the heels of Denon’s top of the line universal player DVD-A1UDCI comes the Denon DBP-4010UDCI. The new DBP-4010CI is also a universal disc player with the exception of no analogue balanced audio output. It features many of the same engineering and design attributes.

Design

Denon DBP-4010UDCI Construction
The DBP-4010UDCI shares the same curved fascia as the flagship A1UDCI. It is finished in attractive black for the US market and silver for EU and Asia. This solidly built 22-pound player utilizes the same vibration-resistant chassis which has a low center of gravity for improved precision. The disc tray features an advanced disc mechanism that rejects dust and magnetic influences to provide a stable platform for all your discs, so playback remains consistently error-free. Other than the usual Eject and Play/Forward buttons there are 3 blue lights on the left of the tray to indicate clock sync between the player and new Denon AV receivers that have Denon Link 4th capability.
The stable 6-block design isolates the most critical audio and video circuits to eliminate cross-interference. This helps keep both picture and sound as pure and distortion-free as possible.
Features
It will play all the discs in your music and video collection, including Blu-ray, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD and music CD, along with Kodak and Fuji picture discs. Denon have chosen Anchor Bay’s VRS ABT processing technology for pin-sharp upscaling, 1080/24p and Pixel Image Correction. It also features i/p upconversion and precision video scaling along with SD and HD digital video noise reduction and multi-cadence detection, along with a full suite of picture adjustment controls for optimum image clarity.
The audio sections include full 7.1 analog outputs with fully configurable bass management powered by Denon’s DDSC-HD dual 32 bit SHARC processors along with a separate stereo down-mix analog output that features its own 24 bit D/A conversion. Incorporating BD-Live (via Ethernet), the DBP-4010UDCI is the world’s first player to feature built-in web browser and remote access capabilities, allowing iPhone and iPod Touch remote control via LAN/network as well as installer remote setup and configuration functionality.
With SACD or DVD-Audio discs you get dynamic, detailed sound that these high-resolution formats are capable of delivering. If you have a compatible Denon AV receiver, you will be able to take advantage of the new Denon Link 4th jitter-reduction function that improves sound quality even further. Denon Link 4th uses the master clock in the AV receiver as the reference for controlling the video circuitry and the disc drive in the player, and the digital video and audio signals from Blu-ray disc are transmitted to the AV surround receiver via an HDMI cable.

Denon Link 4th Jitter Suppression Technology for Audio and Video
The DBP-4010UDCI also handles the lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD™ Master Audio soundtracks, so you can enjoy exceedingly detailed surround sound that really pulls you into the on-screen action. HDMI and multichannel analog outputs give you two different options for transferring this top-notch audio to your home theater receiver.
Performance
First off, this player will only realize its full potential when used with a Denon AV receiver with Link 4th like the new Denon AVR-4810CI or Denon AVR-5308CI. Preliminary performance tests were done with the player coupled with the AVR-4810CI. When Denon Link between the player and receiver is established the blue “clock control” lights on the DBP-4010UDCI will light up. It passed all the cadence tests on the Spears and Munsil Blu-ray benchmark test disc with flying colors. Picture quality is crisp and detailed. Edge definition is well defined with no evidence of jaggies.
With contrast levels adjusted correctly according to the test disc, dark action scenes from The Dark Knight blu-ray disc were quite simply the richest seen on a Blu-ray. The images present itself with wonderful depth, almost three-dimensional, yet remaining natural and appealing. Color saturation is rich, with splashes of deep primaries and not a hint of chroma noise, bleeding or smearing. Shadow delineation is also excellent, with even the darkest areas showing fine details and textures. All in all the video performance lives up to expectations of a player of this pedigree.
Even more impressive is the sound. Warner provides a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround track which is enveloping and dynamic. Low bass is tight and depth of sound across the front soundstage is top-notch. Dialogue is perfectly balanced and always intelligible even with soft deep mumblings from Bruce Wayne behind his mask.
Conclusion
The Denon DBP-4010CI falls in a price range that is at the higher end of the consumer market. At less than half the price of its own flagship, Denon has made it easier for those who are not in that stratospheric league but still want high end performance. But with Oppo’s excellent DBP-83 which has the same features coming in at a fraction of the price the DBP-4010UDCI do face rather stiff competition. However, if you already have or are planning to upgrade to any of the latest Denon receivers with Link 4th, this machine is a no brainer.
