Denon DBP-2010CI

Blu-ray technology is finally taking a huge step forward with the increased popularity of HDTVs and with it being the most widely accepted high-definition format. There are now many blu-ray DVD players in the market as opposed to just the high-end models a couple of years ago. The entry-level players attract those that want good value for their money, while the mid-range players are improving by incorporating useful extras that beginner and advanced users would enjoy. The Denon DBP-2010CI Blu-ray player falls in the mid-range category, aiming to deliver high performance and useful extras.

Design

Denon uses the same black finish as the other Denon players. It has a lonely power button on the left side and the rest of the buttons on the opposite end including the standard playback buttons along with an HDMI resolution button. There is an SD card slot on that side as well.

The disc tray is in the center, which is common and convenient with the info display directly under. Just under the display is all the logos representing the power and versatility of the Denon DBP-2010CI Blu-ray player. Like the other Denon players, it has leg supports, making it best for stacking it with other Denon equipment, or fitting into any home theater set-up for that matter.

Features

This mid-range player surprises with an interesting set of features. Its support for BD-Live is one of the most interesting because it allows viewers to enjoy the full length of any Blu-ray title and access the internet content as well. There is an Ethernet port located on the back so that it can download the data online to any SD memory card that is inserted in the front of the player. Keep in mind that there is no USB 2.0 terminal in this particular model so an SD memory card is a must when accessing web content. Since it maintains the Profile 2.0 specification, Bonus View features can be accessed as well.

This player is also equipped with the new Denon Link 4th. When paired with the latest generation Denon receivers like the Denon 4310CI you will get the benefit of reduced digital jitter resulting in audio performance that more resembles the original recording.

Although the Internet connectivity lacks support for browsing online services, the DBP-2010CI can easily download firmware updates online for performance upgrades from time to time. It also manages to be up-to-date with the competition by adding support for the BD discs that are created by the newer HD camcorder models with both AVCHD playback and DivXHD playback present.

A variety of outputs are also found on the back of the player including composite, component, and analogue audio outputs which are a great addition to the existing HDMI and Ethernet connections. The Denon DBP-2010CI also has a new “Source Direct” feature that can natively pass the signal through for best possible audio performance.

Performance

The basic design may classify the Denon DBP-2010CI in the entry-level category, but the ABT VRS upconversion technology that is new to the DBP-2010CI makes it a bit more powerful than the rest of the entry-level players. This technology effectively upscales any format to 1080p via HDMI. What makes this different from standard upscaling methods is that the ABT (Anchor Bay Technologies) is famous for IP scaling and upconverting far better than others. It also aids in reducing video noise significantly and supports SD de-interlacing for motion adaptive uses.

Load times and responsiveness have largely improved from the Denon 2500BTCI, but still much slower than the OPPO BDP-83. Downloading the latest firmware improves load times even further. Color accuracy is very good and does not over-saturate reds like the older Denon 1800BD. Blu-ray performance at 1080P 24fps is excellent, rendering smooth images and negligible edge crawl.

Denon has always been known for excellent audio performance. This player is no exception. Audio quality from the 24/192 Burr Brown DACs is natural during playback of more acoustic tracks and yet punchy when called for on action movies. Resolution of bass and trebles are crisp and clear without any sense of edginess in the high frequencies.

Bottom Line

The Denon DBP-2010CI Blu-ray player is a well-equipped entry-level player. Though it isn’t really the cheapest on offer, it has some interesting features that are worth the extra money for those who appreciate the build quality and top notch audio and video performance. Those looking for legacy support will be happy to know its wide support for lots of different discs and different connections found at the back of the player. The Internet connectivity and enhanced technologies make this a well-rounded player.
